Giving Banking Matters a Fresh Start: Our Redesign for the Oregon Bankers Association

|March 18, 2026|

In the second half of 2025, the Oregon Bankers Association (OBA) reached out to Big Red M about redesigning their long-standing member magazine, Banking Matters. It was an exciting opportunity to give them a fresh look that more authentically reflects the association and something they could be genuinely proud to share with their members.

Big Red M’s Senior Graphic Designer, Jon Cannon, led the project. His approach was grounded in a clear philosophy: lighten everything up and let the content breathe.

“My main priority was to really lighten up an otherwise heavy and dense magazine. I wanted to choose new fonts that were easier to read and give them a little more space to exist. Overall, this magazine needed to lighten up and brighten up.”

Editorial design lives and dies by readability, and Jon’s font selections reflect that. He chose typefaces that invite readers in rather than demanding effort.

OBA also wanted the magazine to feel rooted in the natural character of the Pacific Northwest. Jon’s solution was a series of organic textures woven throughout the layout, creating subtle visual interest while also serving a structural purpose. Color overlays on the textures act as section markers throughout the issue without ever feeling repetitive.

Color was the most delicate part of the refresh. Rather than overhauling the existing palette entirely, Jon retained the base colors OBA’s members already recognize and simply adjusted and brightened them. Thoughtful evolution over disruptive reinvention.

“I did want to retain some familiarity with the magazine OBA’s members would already have. And this is the result! Projects like these are always fun. Everyone learns a lot about the heart of the work they do and it’s a rejuvenating and exciting process. I believe it will be something to be very proud of.”
