I’ve gained a lot of insight, information, and ideas from podcasts. I listen to them almost every morning. My top five at the moment are:
The GaryVee Audio Experience by Gary Vaynerchuk – entrepreneurship, branding, and more.
Sell or Die by Jeffrey Gitomer – he’s a sales guru and very funny. I love his stuff.
The Marshall Pruett Podcast by Marshal Pruett – all about IndyCar racing.
In the Circle by FastpitchNews – all fast pitch softball.
The Tim Ferriss Show by Tim Ferriss – one of the best business podcasts out there! Tim also wrote Tools of Titans.
One of the episodes that really resonated with me was one where he interviewed Jocko Willink, a navy seal. Jocko talks about how discipline equals freedom. I think this applies to association executives and to those in business development.
Here’s what I think discipline means in this context and what works for me, you’ll have to figure out what it means to you.

1. Members and prospects come first when we’re selling here at the Moery Company. We spend too much time thinking about what we’re going to say and not enough about them. Discipline in terms of the prospect being first in your mind.

2. Spend time on prospecting. Every week, allot time to reach out to people you’ve never spoken with or worked with before.

3. Renewal of contracts. It’s a process and a discipline. Allot time for renewing your current members, sponsors, and partnerships. It’s always worth the money and the effort to stay in the loop. It’s absolutely essential to keep in touch with their needs.

4. Make action a strategy. The discipline of always being active will help you be successful.

Those are four disciplines that I think about when it comes to associations – and business – space that helps us thrive.
Thanks, Jocko, for the tips.
